Happies and Crappies #4

The Vintage Modern Wife: Happies and Crappies Link Up

It's Happies and Crappies time!!

Happy Friday everyone! How was your week??  Here is a sneak peak into mine:

Happies:
- I FINALLY got my link up button to work!!! Yahooo!!! Thanks Nicole!

- I finished the Tough Mudder!! Whoo-wooo!  I am SO glad it's done and over with, haha!  It was challenging, both physically and mentally.  As I was running in the FREEZING, and I mean FREEZING weather soaking wet, I told my husband "I am NEVER doing this again!".  Now that I am thawed out, I realize that I actually would like to do it again- ONLY in a warmer climate!  Like in the middle of the summer.
before...so happy and full of aspirations

Mr. Pea...ready to go

WTF just happened and why can't I feel my body?? And why is my shirt 3 sizes bigger??

Mr. Pea and his bestie...these faces explain it all :)

- Jacob had Kindergarten Round Up!!  This is a day in the spring where up and coming kinder families can come and meet the teachers and learn what kindergarten will entail.  This is my second baby to go to kindergarten so we know all the tips and tricks but it still is very exciting.  We have the BEST kinder team at our school and we are looking forward to the upcoming year!

Look at this pea!  All excited...and still holding his little monkey that he has loved since he was born :)

Getting acquainted to the tables in kinder!

Jacob met Comet the Coyote!  He was so excited!

- I have ANOTHER race this Saturday- The Dirty Girl Mud Run!  This will be SO fun and I am praying for a warmer morning :)  I am running with a group of gals that are doing this for the first time, and I am so honored to be with them on their flagship race.

- I ran 80 miles in the month of February!  That gives me a total of 144.8 for the year towards the goal of hitting 1,000 by the end of 2013.  I am aiming for at least 90 miles in March, let's see about that!

- Mr. Pea insisted I get a pedicure and a massage yesterday! WOW! What a treat!  I hadn't had a pedi since Jan 30, 2010 (the day before I had Hannah) and hadn't had a massage since I was preggers with Jacob, so bother were overdue!  It was AH-mazing and my toes look AH-dorable. Thanks Mr. Pea!

Crappies:

- Jacob got his first ear infection this week :(  He had to miss school yesterday and was so sad about it.  I hate when my kids are sick!  A warm up is around the corner so hopefully these sick buggies can get the f*%& out of here!

- I didn't lose any weight this week...boo!  I have 6lbs I'd like to lose.  I was VERY sore after the Mudder so I pretty much took it easy this week...which meant no running...which meant to a zero pound weight loss.  Tomorrow I'm going to be hitting the treadmill since Mr. Pea is working, unless I can find a babysitter!!! Any takers?!?!

I hope you had a great week too!!

Say my name {link up}

This is a link up with Stephanie, Amber and Amanda!

The story behind my blog title is pretty self-explanatory.  I have three kiddies, also known as my peas (get it, three peas in a pod?? ha), and this blog is about our life; hence My Three Peas.  I like to blog about a variety of things: the ups and downs of being a mother and all the fun and not so fun things we do everyday.  Also,  I like to sprinkle in some of my other passions like crafting, recipes, running and DIY.

I began my blog after much deliberation.  I created the title on Blogger almost a year before I began writing it.  I thought it sounded fun but figured no one would want to read it so why bother?? My mother said it would be a great idea and that she would love to read it.  Fast forward to about 6 months and my mom, who was my only parent I had ever known, passed away very unexpectedly from stage 4 breast cancer.  When I finally decided to write it took a little pushing from my friend Courtney and some inspiration in my ear from my mama...and thus, My Three Peas was born!

Blogging is a like an escape for me.  Being a stay at home mom (former teacher) very little time in my day is devoted to ME.  Writing my blog is my hobby and I enjoy doing it!  It also helps to keep my family, whom reside in Massachusetts, up to date on our lives.

In honor of My Three Peas, here are some pictures of my three peas: Abigail, Jacob and Hannah.

Thanks world for reading my blog! Someday, I hope my peas enjoy it as well.

Top ten Tuesday: Things I'm sick of saying

Ever feel like a broken record??  I certainly do, everyday.

Here's the current top ten things I'm seriously sick of saying:

1. Put your toys away.

2. Stop drawing "around" you paper, and please draw ON it.

3. Flush the toilet.

4. No, you cannot wear shorts, it's 30 degrees out and you are sick.

5. Wipe the snot off your face.

6. Please wipe your bum after you go poop.

7. Get out of the fridge.

8. Get out of the freezer.

9. No, I'm not buying that.

10. No, you cannot have 6 drinky yogurts a day.

I could go on and on and on and on and on but I am out of time....what are you currently sick of saying???  It can't possibly be any worse that #6?!?!

Happies and Crappies! #3

Happies and Crappies!!

How was every one's week??  Here's what I did!

Happies:
* Snow!  We had 5 inches of snow this week, which is unusual for Tucson, to say the least.  Being a native New Englander I am no stranger to snow and miss it every winter.  It was fun to have it fall for a whole day and also to watch the peas play in it.

Now THAT is some snow!

* Rodeo break: The peas were off of school yesterday and today and while we didn't travel anywhere, we did get to go out to lunch and over to the zoo.

* The Tough Mudder is this Sunday!!  Wow, that came fast!  I am excited to make it through this colossal muddy race with Mr. Pea by my side...it should be fun!!

Crappies:

* The peas appear to be getting sick, AGAIN.  Nothing like the last crud that came through the house but still coughs and runny noses are a plenty.

*The Tough Mudder is this Sunday!!  Holy crap, that SERIOUSLY came fast.  I am SUPER nervous about certain obstacles, like the giant wall Everest.  I am praying I don't smack my face against it :/ Wish me luck...I may need it.

Yea, this beast here.  It says "no quit in here", so does that mean I can't go around it?!?

Hopefully next week's Happies and Crappies won't all be crappies about how crappy I feel because I smacked my face on the wall!

And...again for some strange reason, STILL cannot get the link up button to actually LINK so please check out

My goal is to have this figured out for next week :)

Downeast basics blogger mixer!

This week, some blogging buddies and I were invited to come check out the new spring line of clothes at Downeast Basics!  It was oodles of fun mingling and chatting...oh, and shopping too!  And what's more fun that that!!

Our local store is in the Tucson Mall, upstairs by Penny's.  I have been in the store before and I like it's "boutique" feel.  All the clothes are organized by color and style so it's easy to be drawn to each section.  I, of course, was drawn to the blue and greens...and they had lots of new spring green items to choose from!

Their clothes are, what I would describe as "preppy sheik".  They are classic pieces that can be paired with many items, which makes putting together outfits a breeze.  It's like a grown-up version of Forever 21 ;)  They are feminine and stylish, acceptable for work, shopping or going out with friends or just the kiddies.  The BEST thing is that they are AFFORDABLE, which is a MAJOR plus in my book!  Being a stay at home mom means I am on a budget, but I still like to look cute!  Downeast Basics is the perfect place to shop for that.

They had a nice clearance section as well, where they had some of their fall/winter items on sale for great prices!

When you have found your perfect outfit, they had a large section of clearance and regular priced jewelry and accessories to wrap it all together!

Here is my adorable friend Courtney shopping with me!!  She can make any outfit look fabulous :)

Here is part of my new green outfit. The boat neck 3/4 lenght tee is SUPER soft and comfy.  Perfect for any season.  Behind it, is my new favorite cardigan sweater.  It had cutie-patootie stripes and is thin enough for a Tucson summer evening.  Also, it was long, which I LOVE.  I don't tops that are too short.  I paired it with some uber-comfy black fleece-lined leggings.  Holy comfortable!!  Wearing these makes people wonder...hmmm...did she just get off the treadmill or had she been this fashionable since she woke up?!?  No one will know :)  I also snagged a pair of silvery blue leggings as well.  I found an additional coupon to use {of course!} so I was a happy camper!

Here we are! Aren't we cute??  Don't be deceived...I am NOT sleeping...not quite sure what's happening with my eyes though!  Courtney, Anabelle and I had a blast shopping and are already over due for another shopping date :)

So if you are in the market for some new ADORABLE and well-priced spring clothes, head over to Downeast and check them out!!

Browse their social media sites as well:

What's for dinner? {Slow cooker shredded chicken}

Spoiler alert!!!  I can get lazy at times...like lots of times!  As I was categorizing my blog posts the other day, I realized I am seriously lacking in the recipe department!!  Is that because I have been SO lazy lately, and haven't been trying new recipes?? Probably!  This made me remember that I have been wanting to rate some Pinterest recipes and share them with you all.

For my introductory "What's for dinner" post, I will share what I made for dinner earlier tonight, Shredded Chicken Sandwiches in the crock pot.

This was the original link:

I pinned it because it looked yummy.  I've had some chicken in the fridge for a few days and needed to make something with it but was feeling...wait for it....LAZY!  So I wanted to make something in the crock pot and since I still have lots of left over buns from Hannah's party I figured shredded chicken.

I modified it some to turn it into shredded chicken instead of beef.

Shredded Chicken Sandwiches in the Crock Pot
3 chicken breasts
1 envelope Lipton onion soup mix
1/2 c ketchup
1/3 c brown sugar
1/4 c. chicken stock
1/2 t dried parsley
1/4 t. garlic powder
pepper to taste

Mix all the ingredients, except the chicken and pepper, in the crock pot.  Sprinkle the chicken with the pepper and place in the crock pot.

Cook on LOW for 6 hours.  Shred the chicken with two forks after about 5 hours and then let look for another hour.

I put a smidge of ranch dressing on the bun and added some spring greens.  We had steamed broccoli with it.  Mr. Pea was at work so it was just me and the peas. There is plenty left over for him later and some more.

Overall results: 5 * rating
Easiness- ***** SUPER easy!!!  I put it all in the pot and did nothing else :)
Healthiness- **** I don't have an exact calorie count, but it was pretty healthy.  I didn't have an WW buns, which would've made it better.
Taste-  ***** Yum!  It had a nice, light flavor and it made the house smell good.
Cost- **** Depending on how much you pay for chicken, that it! The other ingredients I have on hand.
Best audience- family friendly
And the biggest test of all...did the peas eat it?!?!  YES they all ate a small sandwich!  Hooray!

Look for a new "What's for Dinner?" post every week.  This will help me to be less lazy and actually COOK more!

Happy {crock pot} cooking!

I am so very excited to do my first giveaway!!  This is a big step for my and my little bloggy.  I am so happy to spread my craft love with the world!

I had a few people that couldn't comment on the blog due to technical difficulties so I put everyone's name on a slip of paper and put them in a bowl and picked a winner.  I was honest, promise!!

Drum roll please.......and the winner is...

Anabelle Pearson!!

Yay, I am SO happy for you!!!  Anabelle was Abby's kinder teacher and better be Jacob's teacher this coming year. ;)  She is a fellow blogger as well. Her blog is called Keeping Up With the Pearsons and she writes about her adorable kiddies.

Now, she just needs to pick a color!

I have another giveaway in the works, so stay tuned :)  Thank you to everyone who participated!

A "cross fit" treadmill workout

This girl has a nice butt.  I do not.
In order for me to attempt to get a nicer butt, I run.  But just running at roughly the same speed for varying distances isn't quite enough.  I believe that Tony Horton calls it "muscle confusion" and I am sure there is a lot of science to back it up, but I don't have time to read all of that so I will just take his word for it.

Some days I don't have the luxury of running outside so then I will use my treadmill.  I can't run distance runs on it though, it's just too boring.  In order to "spice it up" some, I like to do different types of workouts, usually totaling no more than 4 miles, which is about my max attention span on the TM.  Sometimes I vary the incline and do a "hills" run, sometimes I vary the speed and do a "interval" run.  This week I tried a "cross fit" run and it was fun!  It went by fast too.

I want to share what I did, so you can try it out some time.

Cross fit is like the king of muscle confusion, so basically I have added a mini workout in the middle of my running.

I set the incline at a 3, because I wasn't in the mood for too major of a hill.

Run 1/2 mile on a 6 mph
 Stop and do:
10 push ups
20 squats
30 lunges

*repeat 6 times

I alternated my speed slightly but running a 6 for the first 1/2 mile, a 6.5 on the second, then a 6 again, 6.5 again...yadda, yadda.  You get the picture.  It was a bit harder than I would've thought, or else I would have bumped it up to a 7.  Next time I will try that though.  This three mile workout packed quite a punch and I enjoyed it.

It's nice to add some variety into your workouts....and also remember:

This is good to keep in mind :)

The most annoying mother on the planet

When you are pregnant, there are ALL sorts of "rules" about being a mother.  Do this, don't do this, do this more, do this less...yadda, yadda.  There is no real "right" or "wrong" way to parent...it's lost somewhere in the middle.  Most of us figure out a system that works for us, based on all the books we've read, the advice we have been given (and chose to listen to or purposefully ignore), and all of the real world experiences we gain once we are in the trenches.  Hopefully, with enough dumb luck and prayers, our kids will turn out happy, loving, caring, productive citizens that are well adjusted and do not hate us.  There are some kids that aren't so lucky.

Meet Felix.

Who's Felix, you ask?  Felix is the son of the most annoying mother on the planet.  I don't know him or his mother personally, thank God, but I did have the "pleasure" of meeting them the other day in the checkout line at Target.

Ahhh...glorious Target.  Don't you just love it there??  It's like someone took all my hopes and dreams and boxed them up in place :) On this occasion, I did not have the ability to be alone, but was minus one kid, and two are easier than three.  We successfully made our way through the store, selected items in the wagon and are ready to check out.  On this day, Jacob had convinced me to buy him another small Spider man so then I had to get the girls something little too (a double pack of mini Lalaloopies were chosen).  While they were holding their new-found treasures, we head to the line. After waiting for a few minutes it's our turn, but then Hannah informs me she has to go potty NOW and by her squirms, I know she's not messing around so I say "I'll be right back" and quickly shove said items back into the wagon and take her potty.  Then we get into line again.  Well, this action altered the course of history and allowed me to meet Felix, his sister and mother.  Lucky us.

As I begin to put my items back on the belt...she comes behind me; Felix (approx. 15 months) standing in the wagon and his mother beside him.  I didn't see his sister...yet.  Are you wondering WHY I know this child's name???  Here's why.  Fellow mamas: Do you remember reading someplace that when you are babies are little you should talk aloud your actions to them?  Like, explain what you are doing? "Oh look, mama is going to make lunch now!  Here are your strawberries and sandwich!" Helps build vocabulary development, especially for the first born.  After you have more than one, the siblings can do that for you.  Well, Felix's mother must have read that too, because she was doing that.  Very loudly.  ABOUT EVERYTHING.

"Look Felix, we are in the checkout line now!  Look Felix, there are two kids in front of us!  Look Felix, they are in a red cart just like you!  Look Felix, you should say hi to them!  Look Felix, here is our orange juice!  Yes Felix, you can hold it. Oh no Felix, we can't put it on the belt yet because it's not our turn!  Look Felix, we have macaroni in the cart.  Yes Felix, you can hold mommy's new bra!"

No joke.  I'm thinking this lady must be a loon.  And then I hear it.  The loudest sound I've heard in the checkout line.  Remember that scene in "Dumb and Dumber" where they're like "want to hear the most annoying sound ever? AHHHHHHH..." on and on??
Yea, it was like that sound, coming from the floor in front of her wagon but behind mine.  The sister.  Felix had a sister.  And she was making that sound.  On the floor.  Super loudly.  The whole time she's growling down there, mommy is still animating her actions to Felix. Now, I know some kids just make a lot of noise, possibly due to a disability, BUT this mother was just acting like she wasn't there and it was the strangest thing ever.

All this noise has my peas in a tizzy.  Hannah starts squirming around, Jake is trying to escape the wagon.  As I am informing him "try to get out of that wagon again and I'll burn your Spider man"  little Felix is still getting a life's lesson about bras and orange juice.  Is she the better parent?  Perhaps.  But all's I know for sure, is that she gets the crown for the most annoying mother on the planet, hands down.  Thankfully Hannah had to pee just at the right time or you would never have known the joys of Felix, his mother and the growling sister.  And for that Hannah, we thank you :)

Happies and Crappies!

My week was mostly uneventful, but always crazy.  How does that happen?

Here is my week in a nutshell:

Happies:

I joined twitter!!  I know, old news, right?  I hadn't joined before but I wanted to so I could share my blog with the twittersphere.  I am still figuring out how to share things on it but hopefully by the days end I will have that under control.

I had a very fun craft night with my friend Courtney with What's Up With the Wilhelms.  We made ADORABLE pom pom necklaces for ourselves and I am giving one away to a lucky reader.  This is my first blog giveaway and I am VERY excited about it!  I also pinned it on Pinterest and that's the first time I have done that.  I am officially on Pinterest, like as a Pin!  How exciting!

I have fell in love with a new online shop for necklaces and earrings called Urban Peach Boutique.  They are super cute and very affordable. I have ordered one and another one is on the way.  After I receive it, I will give this site some blog love and share my new jewelry.

I ran quite a bit this week, 20 miles so far and I am going to try and do 6 miles tomorrow before Mr. Pea has to work.  I may even do a short one on Sunday!  The weather is finally starting to warm up and I am trying to catch up on some miles to meet my goal of hitting 1000 by the end of the year! #sistersrun1000

Crappies:

There is TOO much candy in this house from Valentine's Day!  I gave up all sweets and junk food for Lent and it's making me crazy seeing it all!  It will all start disappearing soon into the trash...whether the kids like it or not.

Mr. Pea has to work 10 days in a row...which sucks for me and obviously even more for him.  I feel so bad when he has to work SO many days in a row.  With his hours and how early our kiddies go to bed, if he's working that usually means they don't see him, which also stinks.  He will work straight up to the Tough Mudder.  Which is next week.  Crap!

I, for some strange reason, STILL cannot get the link up button to actually LINK so please check out

Pom Pom necklace and a giveaway!

Last night, my friend Courtney and I had a wine and crafting night and decided to try our hand making some pom pom necklaces.  Well, as luck would have it, they turned out ADORABLE!  We each made a coral and turquoise one; perfect for spring and summer.

I wanted to share how we made them, so all can enjoy. :)

Supplies needed:
fabric of choice.  (we used three fabrics per necklace, one solid and two patterns)
felt
20 in jewerly chain
wire cutters
hot glue, glue gun and scissors

You will need to make 5 flowers per necklace.  We chose to make two of the solid, two of one pattern and one of the other.  You can mix up your patterns and colors. Crafters choice!
Cut a 2-in felt circle per flower and 10-12 fabric circles of the same size per flower.  Hot glue each fabric circle in half and then in half again so you have little triangle-shaped pieces of fabric.

Glue four down in a circular pattern on the felt circle, the glue four on top of those and two on the very top center.  If it has any spaces, add more felt triangles so it looks nice and full.

When you are done, you will have a fabric pom pom! Make 5 total per necklace.  This is similar to a flower I have made for my wreaths, just done in all fabric.

Decide on how you want your flowers to be arranged on your necklace and hot glue the chain onto the backs of your two end flowers.  We bought a 40 in chain and cut it in half with wire cutters, making sure it would be big enough to slip over our heads!  Glue all the poms onto a large piece of felt and then cut around it so that it holds the poms together, but cannot be seen when you are wearing it.

Ta-da!  Here I am wearing my coraly-pinkish one!  My 7 yr old took the pic so keep that in mind.  It looks super cute and very springy.

In celebration of our beautiful creation, I want to hold my first ever give away!!  I want to make one of these necklaces for a lucky reader.

If you would like to own one, here's how you enter:

Top ten Tuesday: Why I hate Valentine's Day

Top Ten Tuesday: Reasons why I hate Valentine's Day

Sorry folks, it's true.  Valentine's Day is the WORST holiday.  It's a Hallmark holiday full of obligation, pressure and hideous hearts.  There is no secret back story, no sad, torrid love story of why I dislike Valentine's Day.  Mr. Pea and I have been together since 2000 so it's not like I haven't been in love all of my adult Valentine's Days.  I just think it's lame....and here is why.

Ten reasons why I dislike Valentine's Day:

1. I hate the color red.  Yuck.

2. Valentine's Day BY FAR has the worst fashion sense of all holidays.  There is no way to make V-Day sheik....it always looks like someone ate too many conversation hearts and threw up everywhere.

3.  It's a waste of money. Why do people have to feel obligated to spend a bunch of money on this crap?  We just had Christmas for pete's sake!  Can't we have a few months before we are obligated to buy more shit for people???

4.  Candy is the gift of choice.  I usually give up sweets for Lent, which Valentine's Day will sometimes fall during so I can't even have them..and plus, I am trying to get ready for the 9 month long Arizona summer here!!!  No extra calories, please!!!

5. Valentine's Day was an invented holiday from the start.  It was started to divert attention from some pagan holiday that Christian's didn't want people celebrating...way to go early Christians!  Look what you did!

6.  Too much obligation.  I love love and romance, but why do I need a special day for Mr. Pea to tell me so??  I don't...and he better tell me everyday, dammit!  I also feel for the people who don't have someone special in their lives.  Such a stigma not to be "in love" on V-Day.  :(

7.  I think the kiddies passing out Valentine's in school are cute, and I know they enjoy it.  But us mama's are always feeling the pressure to "step it up".  No longer is it ok just to hand make cute "thanks for being my friend" cards...now we feel like we have to bake, make lollipops or spend $30 putting together goodie bags for all their friends!  More money!

8.  People use the spelling of love "luv" a lot on this day, which I just find annoying.  Come on people, it's only four letters....are you that lazy?

9.  My Fry's takes away 10 of the closest parking spots to construct a tent for lazy and procrastinating men to quickly get overpriced flowers and candy for their wives or girlfriends.  I have three kids...I like those closer parking spots.  Get that dang tent out of there!  The inside of Fry's isn't much better...I can barely make it through the produce section without tripping over a flower or stuffed bear display or being strangled by a barrage of balloon strings hanging from the ceiling.

10.  Cheesy romantic comedies.  Lame.

Lenten Sacrifices

The Lenten season is almost upon us!  This year I am giving up all snack foods and sweets...it's sort of like, "dieting for Jesus".  Hopefully I'll lose an extra pound or two as an added bonus :)

My kiddies are too young for them to give up something for Lent yet, but when they are ready, I've prepared a list of things for them to choose from as options:

- fighting
- whining
- making messes
- leaving crumbs everywhere
- squeezing toothpaste on the counter and leaving it
- crying
- staining clothes
- forgetting to bring their things in from the car
- waking up super early everyday
- not flushing the potty
- screaming
- being "full" after 3 bites of dinner
- requesting dessert after announcing they are "full"
- throwing temper tantrums
- losing things
- wanting to watch 300 episodes of Spider man a day
- coming out of their beds at night

40 days without any of these would be FANTASTIC!!  Take your pic Peas...the world is your oyster.

Saving the world...one dirty run at a time

I like running; running straight races and muddy obstacle runs.  They are different animals and require different training.  These mud runs are a nice change of pace and are LOTS of fun.  I have done a few in the past and they are always a good time.

I have been invited to get together a team for The Dirty Girl mud run and am VERY excited about it!!!  This race is ladies only and is a 5k muddy obstacle course that will be held here in Tucson at Old Tucson Studios on March 2nd.

What makes this race special is that part of the proceeds goes to benefit The National Breast Cancer Foundation, which is a cause very near and dear to me.  As most of you know, my mom lost her battle with breast cancer last March, and the race will take place 9 days before the one year anniversary of her passing.  Running this race will be a tribute to her and all others who have struggled with this b of a cancer.

This 5k race will feature 11 obstacles with such hilarious names as "utopian tubes" and the "PMS" (pretty muddy stuff).  Good thing no boys are allowed because all this lady talk will sure make them blush!!  This un-timed race is a great beginners course for newbies and a fun time for running pros.

When you sign up you get a t-shirt and a dirty girl key chain.  You also get a free drink at the end, and the icon was of a Cosmo so I am hopeful that will be the bev of choice!!

Keeping in line with the breast cancer theme, I decided to name my team the SuperBoobies....clever, eh???  I already have visions of adorable shirts with a Superman-esk hot pink SB on the front...and perhaps a cape???  There are prizes for best team names and costumes.

Want to run with me and join my team??  Log onto the Dirty Girl Run site here:  http://www.godirtygirl.com/  and then click on "event schedule" and pick Tucson, March 2nd.
When you register, find my team name, SuperBoobies and sign up!!!!  We are the 8:30 wave to run.  Being the coupon ninja, I scored us a code.  Enter code DGTUBLOG20 and receive 20% off your registration!!!

So spread the word, invite your friends and come get dirty with the SuperBoobies!  Anyone is welcome, the more the merrier.  Don't be shy if this is your first race...you have to start some place!!

Here are some photos of past races:

This run will be a great time and supports a great cause.  Come join the SuperBoobies and help me save the world....one dirty run at a time!!!
